Dick & Jane
Scott, Foresman & Company's
PUBLISHING TIMELINE

1909-14 William H. Elson writes The Elson Readers.

1930 William H. Elson collaborates with Dr. William S. Gray to produce the Elson-Gray Readers. Zerna Sharp, a reading consultant for the firm, was responsible for the development of Dick and Jane for the the paperbound Elson-Gray Basic Pre-Primer which was issued in 1930.

1936 The paperbound Elson-Gray Basic Pre-Primer was retitled and reissued as the Dick and Jane: Elson-Gray Basic Pre-Primer. Dick & Jane were also featured in hardcover in the 1936 reprint of the Elson-Gray Basic Readers Primer. It was probably at this time that the oversized Our Big Book and the extremely rare Little Friends teaching aids were distributed.

1940 This was a busy year for Scott, Foresman & Company. A new set of pre-primers, two basic readers for The first grade levels, and the Think and Do workbooks were all introduced this year.

The new pre-primers were: Before We Read, We Read Pictures, We Look and See, We Work and Play and We Come and Go.

A new version of Our Big Book was published using text and artwork from the We Look and See pre-primer.

The new 1st grade readers were: Fun with Dick & Jane and Our New Friends.

The Cathedral Basic Readers, featuring Dick and Jane in a Catholic setting, were introduced.

1941 Three new health books were issued. Two of the titles, Happy Days with Our Friends and Good Times with Our Friends, featured Dick and Jane. The third health book was entitled Three Friends.

The new 2nd grade readers were: Friends and Neighbors and More Friends and Neighbors.

The new 3rd grade readers were: Streets and Roads and More Streets and Roads.

1942 Times and Places was issued as the fourth grade reading book.

1943 Days and Deeds was issued as the 5th grade reading book.

People and Progress was issued as the 6th grade reading book.

1947 Three supplemental readers were issued as the Reading for Independence collection. This set consists of We Three for the 1st grade, What Next for the 2nd grade and Tall Tales for the 3rd grade.

1951 Dick and Jane were in need of another update. Artwork and text were revised for the 1951 printings. To clearly indicate the revised volumes, Scott, Foresman & Company added New to the title of each revised book and pre-primer.

A Dick and Jane hardcover optional pre-primer, Guess Who, was added to the line-up.

An additional 5th grade reading book, More Days and Deeds was published.

1952 The Cathedral Basic Readers, were revised, changing Dick and Jane to John and Jean.

The three supplemental readers in the Reading for Independence set, We Three, What Next and Tall Tales were reissued.

1954 The Dick and Jane health books, Happy Days with Our Friends and Good Times with Our Friends were reissued. Another health book, Three Friends, which did not feature Dick and Jane, was also reissued.

1955 More Times and Places was issued as the second book for the 4th grade reading level.

1956 The entire Dick and Jane collection was reprinted without changes or revisons.

More People and Progress was issued as the second book for the 6th grade reading level.

1962 It was time to give Dick and Jane another facelift. The paperbound Before We Read, We Read with Pictures and We Read More Pictures were reissued with new artwork. The three pre-primers were rewritten and retitled as Sally, Dick and Jane, Fun with Our Family and Fun Wherever We Are. The New Guess Who was retained as a hardcover optional pre-primer.

A reissue of Our Big Book used artwork and text from the Sally, Dick & Jane and Fun with Our Family pre-primers and the Think-and-Do workbook.

The revisions continued as Fun with Dick and Jane was dropped from circulation and the first grade primers became Fun with Our Friends and More Fun with Our Friends.

1965 To counter criticism for the lack of ethnic diversity in their books, Scott, Foresman & Company reissued some readers with artwork featuring African-American and Asian children and families. The pre-primers Fun Wherever We Are and Fun With Our Family were retitled as Now We Read and Fun With the Family. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade readers were reissued with the updated artwork. This was the final edition of the Dick & Jane readers.

The Vistas and Wide Horizons collections were issued as part of Scott Foresman & Company's Language Arts Program.
